Story

Benefits of Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Education (ECE) plays a pivotal role in developing cognitive, emotional, and social skills in children. It nurtures mindfulness, emotional balance, and creativity, fostering societal inclusivity. Research highlights its impact on reducing crime, enhancing productivity, and boosting happiness. Governments and nonprofits, like Smile Foundation, integrate ECE with health and nutrition, ensuring holistic development through structured programs and community engagement. Smile Foundation is actively involved in early childhood education through various initiatives aimed at creating a solid foundation for young children.

Mothers and Grandmothers Leap Towards Literacy

The adult education programme is empowering older women to do their own

The oldest students in this classroom are 82 years old, while the youngest are in their 30s. The rest fall into their 40s, 50s, and 60s, forming a diverse group that includes mothers and grandmothers. Every Saturday, these women stride briskly to school, each carrying a red shopping bag filled with tools for learning: an alphabet book, a basic math book, two notebooks, a pencil, an eraser, and a sharpener.

Their school is the same higher secondary school their children or grandchildren attend, but here, the roles are reversed—the younger generation has become the teachers, guiding these women on their journey out of illiteracy. This unique initiative, called Alor Disha (Towards Light), operates every Saturday from 2 to 3 pm in a ground-floor classroom.

The program began in 2017 under the Kanyashree Club with 27 students and continues nearly three years later, empowering and inspiring through education.

Every Wrinkle Tells A Story.

Let’s ensure those stories are filled with care and compassion.

#AgingWithGrace

Technology has greatly benefited the elderly, with innovations like telemedicine, wearable health devices, and smart home tech enhancing healthcare, safety, and independence. However, many poor and marginalized seniors cannot afford these advancements, limiting their access to these benefits.

Hope for Change: Addressing the Marginalization of Musahars

The Musahar community primarily inhabits northern India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, along with presence in Nepal. The largest concentration, around nine out of ten, resides in Bihar, particularly in its northern regions. Despite governmental initiatives aimed at providing assistance, many Musahars continue to grapple with poverty, facing unequal opportunities compared to their counterparts. These pictures were taken near Bettiah, in India. I took them to help a charity called Karuna before the pandemic. Karuna is a charity in London that helps people and communities in Asia.

Kanyashree Grant Money

Launch Her As A Business Woman

The runaway success of her shop drives Anjali to expand further.

Anjali Das, a former student, is an inspiration at her school, thanks to the opportunities provided by Kanyashree Prakalpa. At 18, she used her Kanyashree grant to start a shop on unused family land with her brother, selling items appealing to schoolgirls. The shop thrives, now offering stationery and plans for expansion into a beauty parlour. Anjali balances her business and college while freelancing as a bridal make-up artist. Her success motivates other girls to use their grants for entrepreneurship.
